Elevated Engineering and Building Assessment Using Drones
Length: 45 Minutes

Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Systems (aka UAVs aka Drones) continues to be a hot topic for engineers and designers. Within the past 10 years, we have seen technology change how we live, work, play and learn. These advances in technology have enabled humans to be more efficient as well as socially and environmentally conscious and connected. Advances in engineering technology and efficiency have expanded structural engineer’s roles in inspection services. This presentation will highlight drone utilization for exterior surveys and inspection, impact on the built environment, and how drones will continue to influence in the future. This includes areas that are too dangerous for humans or structures where rigging can be difficult or impossible as well as the cost benefits of using a drone. The presentation will also delve into the effectiveness and appropriate applications of drone usage, specifically for hands-on applications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about emerging trends in drones and how to determine the appropriate applications.
  2. Understand the different approaches to planning a drone facade survey (e.g. life safety, building integrity).
  3. Understand the impact of drones on the construction industry and why they are useful.
  4. Understand basic drone licensure, applications and types.

Erik Villari, Partner/COO, JBCI Engineers
Mr. Michael Salera, Senior Project Manager, Joseph B. Callaghan, Inc.

Mike joined JBCI after completing his Master's degree from Villanova University. He has extensive experience in structural analysis and design plus facade assessment and repair. He has analyzed many building materials and his design and problem-solving skills are utilized on both new construction and rehabilitation projects. Mike is the chief Drone Pilot for JBCI. He has been professionally trained and passed the Remote Pilot Certification. He is responsible for establishing and maintaining a system of continuous development and training, manages the pilot's activities and assists in facade condition surveys.
